55% reduction in emissions by 2030 through strategic changes in mobility, energy transition and waste management.

Motivation

After a long trajectory over the last twenty years to fight climate change, in 2018 Sant Cugat City Council committed to reduce at least 40% of its CO₂ emissions by 2030, as part of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Sustainable Energy. A year later, it approved the Declaration of Climate Emergency; and it was then that the drafting of the Climate Emergency Plan and the updating of the objectives and actions of the local strategy against climate change were proposed.

Results

The PAEC defines up to 63 actions to be carried out between 2021 and 2024 and acts on different axes: energy transition and water cycle, sustainable mobility, zero waste, food transition, green infrastructure and biodiversity and cultural transition. These actions will result in savings of 39% of greenhouse gas emissions per capita in 2024 compared to 2005 values. At the same time, work has been done to extend the horizon of the Plan to 2030 through the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (PAESC), which will entail a 55% reduction in per capita emissions with respect to 2005 values.
