Study to reduce climate and environmental impact of maritime transport in the Balearic Islands

  • Client: Directorate General of Maritime and Air Transport, Government of the Balearic Islands
  • Place: Balearic Islands
  • Time period: 2021

Based on the main environmental and climate impacts identified, ERF proposes measures to improve the sustainability of maritime transport of passengers and goods between the islands of the Balearic Islands

Motivation

Maritime transport is a system of vital importance for the economic development and social cohesion of the Balearic Islands. Although it is an efficient means of transport compared to others, it generates an environmental and climatic impact that cannot be underestimated.

Results

ERF has analyzed the impact on climate and environmental change associated with inter-island routes, and has proposed measures to reduce it, with special emphasis on the route between Eivissa and Formentera due to its importance in terms of frequency and number of users. In addition, the route crosses the protected marine area of Els Freus, in the Natural Park of Ses Salines of Eivissa and Formentera, where there is a community of more than 8 km long of oceanic posidonia of great ecological importance.
