Europe's first winery with LEED BD+C environmental and energy certification
Reduction of energy and water consumption through energy efficiency and the use of natural resources
Motivation
The Perelada Group’s new winery is the first in Europe to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) BD+C certification, awarded by the independent U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). In the overall evaluation of energy and environmental quality, the new winery obtained 68 points, 8 more than the number of points strictly necessary to receive the LEED seal in the GOLD category. The building of the new winery is designed by the renowned studio RCR Arquitectes, and ERF has participated as responsible for the environmental and energy optimization and LEED certification.
Results
The scope of the new Caves Perelada winery includes the new production center, the rehabilitation of the Farm buildings and the exterior of the plot, with 2 hectares of grape cultivation. The architectural design of the new winery and farm reduces energy consumption, and the high insulation ensures thermal efficiency. In addition, the foundations of the new winery take advantage of the geothermal energy in the ground, significantly reducing heating, cooling and hot water consumption. All the electricity supplied in the facilities comes from renewable sources; and the building’s lighting is based on very low consumption LED technology, also taking advantage of natural light.
The facilities incorporate an integrated view of the water cycle, reducing potable water demand within the new winery by more than 40% compared to a conventional building. Reclaimed water and rainwater collection are incorporated into the irrigation and toilet system, and a drainage network prevents overloading the sewer and wastewater treatment plant. The new facility incorporates recycled content and locally produced materials, ensuring indoor air quality for workers and visitors through continuous monitoring.
